AP:
Struggling to repair troubled relations, President Bush prodded Vladimir Putin on Thursday about Moscow's retreat from democracy but the Russian leader bluntly rejected the criticism and insisted there was no backsliding.
"Strong countries are built by developing strong democracies," Bush said he told Putin.
Putin responded: Чья бы корова мычала, а твоя бы молчала.1

Norbiz - ROFLMAO! Oh shit, that's not a symptom of being exposed to the gas, is it?
queen crab - well, to be honest, the question of how to say "pot calling the kettle black" came up over at Atrios, so it was in my head. And I just wrote to my friend Dima in St. Petersburg, Russia, asking if there's an idiomatic phrase equivalent to "two peas in a pod".

Whose cow would moo, while yours would be silentThat could be the epigram, possibly the epitaph for this entire sad episode of righteous evil as we stand in the twilight of democracy.

Oh. Ooooh! A reminder of Jefferson's steadfastness (and what he faced was at least as bad as what we face, in a very different way) was just what I needed at the moment. Thanks, NTodd.
