I Am The GOP

Remember this gem?

[A May, 2003 dinner] was organized by the [Majority Leaders's] daughter and campaign manager, Danielle DeLay Ferro, as a fundraiser for Armpac, Delay's political action committee, at Ruth's Chris Steak House on Ninth Street NW. But because the restaurant leases space in a building owned by a federal agency -- in this case, the Smithsonian Institution -- the law forbids smoking. The prohibition is posted on numerous signs inside and outside the restaurant.

But after the main course, DeLay went into "hammer" mode, trying to compel manager Tom Khandker to flout federal regulations and lift the ban. We hear the conversation went something like this:

Khandker: "I'm sorry, sir, but this is a federal building, and it's against the law of the federal government."

DeLay: "I am the federal government."

The House Dems, now that their spine infusion surgery has proven successful, are finally taking the GOP and Tom DeLay to task for all his ethical problems. Here's Minority Leader Pelosi:

Mr. DeLay has proven himself to be ethically unfit to lead his party. The burden now falls upon his fellow House Republicans.

Republicans must answer - do they want an ethically unfit person to be their majority leader, or do they want to remove the ethical cloud that hangs over the Capitol?

DeLay just got his second slap on the wrist from the GOP-run House in a week, but somehow this story isn't hitting the SCLM's radar screen in a big way. Fortunately we have The Stakeholder, which has the full scoop.

As Atrios says, reward good behavior and donate to the DCCC so we can help Pelosi become Majority Leader1.

1 - Long-time readers probably know how hard it was for me to type that. I'm a firm believer in split government, and as I told Atrios yesterday in an e-mail exchange, I would much rather have a GOP House and Dem Senate than give total control of Congress to the Dems. However, DeLay must be stopped at all costs, and I'm willing to let the Democrats have total rule for a couple years if that's what it takes to get rid of this paragon of GOP ethics. Anywayz, I just gave 50 bucks, damn it.

Thank ya kindly, NTodd! Hey, if you can muster $50 even when it goes against your principles, that means everybody else should help us with at least double that - right? ;)

I think the government has been hijacked so severely to the right by the neocons that we will not be able to veer hard to the left without overturning the entire country. Even with Kerry in office, he will have to steer carefully in the middle for a while.
We need two parties checking and balancing each other to make this system work and I hope intelligent people in government see that.

Split government is cool.

The House is full of weirdos on both sides. I prefer the effete, elitist Senators (they all have at least GEDs, I think).

Blogwhoring, 'cause you like looking at job statistics.

Also, am I the only one who was reminded by your post of the Mr. Show commercial "We are the new KKK?"

According to an NPR report this afternoon, DeLay held a brief press conference in which he claimed the ethics committee had dismissed the charges. Which, of course, they didn't.

That has to be the most flagrant, show-your-ass case of down-is-upism of the...um, week, I guess. The pubbies keep raising the bar.

You could think of it as hedging your bet: If Kerry doesn't win (god forbid), then you have a House full of Dems to impeach the lying fucks.

jesse - I agree!

Hubris - I knew I liked you for a reason.

Quaker - more proof that the GOP is full of delusional liars.

A - that's a good way to look at it. Thanks, I feel better!

A few good things would happen if Bush wins. All the scandals will erupt, big time. Lawyers would have no mercy. He wouldn't be able pardon a mess of his cronies at the last minute like Clinton did. The domino theory would happen in slow motion, taking down one staffer after another as the lawsuits and charges get closer and closer to the Oval office. Watching Bush's terror stricken face would be a pleasure.

If Kerry wins, expect a scorched earth attitude as the neocons try to break the government completely before Kerry gets into office. There will be pardons before January.
